Scholarships Are Everywhere, Here Are Your Options
by Jennifer Case
Students aspiring for a college education have innumerable ways to raise funds, but the best way may to simply apply for grants and scholarships.
Scholarships Explained
A scholarship is assistance for higher education given in the form of money. They are usually given away by colleges, universities, governments, organizations, and individuals on the basis of a number of criteria.
Types of Scholarships
Students can apply for four types of scholarships.
1. Merit-based
Merit-based scholarships are given away in recognition of students’ achievements and abilities. Usually, private organizations or colleges award scholarships in appreciation of abilities, achievements and high scores.
2. Need-based
Need-based scholarships are given away talented students with poor financial backgrounds. Students who wish to apply for these scholarships need to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so that the federal government can assess their eligibility for the same.
3. Student-based
Student-based scholarships are given away to students belonging to a particular gender, race, community, religion, and so on. For instance, students belonging to certain minority communities can claim scholarships just because they are deserving students belonging to that community.
4. Career-based
Career-based scholarships are given away by colleges, schools, universities, and other academic institutions to students wishing to study a particular subject. For example, students who wish to study nursing usually get large scholarships simply because nurses are in great demand in the U.S.
How to Apply
Interested students who wish to apply for need-based federal scholarships must fill in and submit the FAFSA.
However, the methods of applying for scholarships given away by individuals, institutions, colleges, foundations, and so on vary.
The first step is to browse sources of scholarship information in local newspapers, periodicals, libraries, school counselors, yellow pages, or online.
Scholarships at Home
Students do not have to travel far for scholarships because a number of local organizations, associations, schools, colleges, and individuals give away scholarships, and all students need to do is apply.
Organizations
Some good sources for scholarships are non-profit organizations, charitable associations, community foundations, teachers, philanthropic individuals, and so on, which focus on giving away scholarships to deserving students of the locality.
Places of Worship
Religious students can always approach their church or temple and request any scholarships available. Needless to say, places of worship offer generous scholarships to those who wish to pursue religious studies.
The above-mentioned are just a few sources of scholarships. Students can also try the Chamber of Commerce or answer the PSAT/NMSQT tests because a number of scholarship programs are based on the scores obtained by students who take this test. In addition, special scholarships are available for students with particular types of disabilities.
