How to Date on a Budget

Impress Your Partner With a Great Night Without Emptying Your Wallet
by Kevin Schneider
While many people don’t expect their dates to be extravagant affairs requiring an inflow of quick cash just to afford them, you should be prepared to spend a little on the object of your affection. A good date can be easy to afford if you plan it properly.
A quick caveat before diving in though: Obviously everyone is different, and these smart spending suggestions may not work for everyone, but they can get you started in the right direction.
The first thing you should do when keeping your date on a budget is to write down what you are going to do. While impulsiveness and spontaneity can be attractive, having to make a stop at a payday loan place in the middle of the date is not going to impress anyone. Take stock of how much money you can spend, then add up the various expenses of dinner, dancing, etc.
There are a lot of great date activities that do not cost any money at all. Instead of going to a night club with a cover charge and overpriced drinks, check your local paper for special events. Maybe there is an art gallery event or community festival on the same night. These often have free admission, and in the case of many gallery openings, free drinks. Since the event is not available every night like a club or bar, going to a special event can give you and your date a unique experience.
When dinner time rolls around, you may not be able to get a free lunch, but you can save a lot on eating out. Try cooking something for your date. Buying food from the grocery store is far cheaper than even fast food. If you feel uncomfortable about cooking for someone, try something simple. Look up a recipe online and follow it to the letter. If the dish comes out a bit unsatisfying, at least your date will appreciate the effort you made.
The most important thing to a successful date, though, may simply being prepared. If you can save your money beforehand instead of scrounging couch cushions for some fast cash, you can relax on money matters and concentrate on your partner. Managing your personal finances is easier than you think, you just have to stay focused.
