iPhone 4S Goes on Sale Worldwide, Crowds Line Up Outside of Apple Stores

Line of People

New Iteration of iPhone Could Sell as Many as 4 Million Units Over Weekend

Steve Wozniak, one of Apple’s co-founders, was first in line at the Apple Store in Los Gatos, California. His tweet, “The long wait begins. I’m first in line. The guy ahead was on the wrong side and he’s pissed,” kicked off the fervor of Apple loyalists who began lining up for the new iPhone 4S mostly in the early hours of Friday morning. While Wozniak may have been the first, he is certainly not the last person scooping up the newest gadget.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Apple may sell as many as 4 million units over the weekend. The previous record was for Apple was when the iPhone 4 debuted, selling 1.7 million units in its first 72 hours of sale. The iPhone has already maxed out preorders from each of the three carriers, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, who will carry the device. The iPhone 4S has already sold over 1 million units thanks to preorders.

With the recent death of Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs, the success of the new phone will be a bright spot in a month marked with bad news. Upon announcement of the iPhone 4S, many consumers, who had been expecting the iPhone 5, criticized the company for not making a bigger step forward. The announcement left many wondering if the cost of the phone would make an upgrade worthwhile.

The new iPhone 4S biggest new feature is a program named Siri, which is allows iPhone owners to use voice commands to find information. According to Wozniak, from his spot outside the doors of the Apple Store, “I have been using Siri, touting it and feeling that this is the way I want all mobile devices to be in the future, in the near future and the far future. You speak to it and it speaks back or it prints back answers, not just links to things that might get you what you need.”

The iPhone 4S also boats an 8-megapixel camera capable of recording video at 1080p. The iPhone 4S was only able to film in 720p using its 5-megapixel camera.

A recent Pew Study has estimated that about 35 percent of all American adults own a smartphone, like the iPhone or phones made using the Google-created Android operating system. It is likely that the new iPhone will help increase that number.
