Gallup Poll Finds 81 Percent of Americans Dissatisfied With Washington

Tax Cuts, Spending Checks and Bureaucratic Gridlock Cited by Respondents of Both Parties

While it may not be surprising news that most Americans are not happy with how the country is being run, it is still a bit eye opening to learn just how many people from both parties are dissatisfied. The poll numbers could result in some surprising behavior from parties as they try and retain what little favor is left in the run-up to next year’s elections.

Results from a Gallup poll released on September 26th show 81 percent of Americans as being unhappy with the government. Not unexpectedly, 92 percent of Republicans report dissatisfaction, while 65 percent of Democrats feel the same way. This may not entirely be a result of the measures enacted, or vetoed, by Barack Obama. 82 percent of Americans are not happy about how the legislative branch has been working.

With possible government shutdowns threatening constantly throughout the summer, whether of the FAA, USPS, or the entire federal government, voters are displeased with the infighting that has forced inaction or delayed reaction to a number of pressing matters.

Voters appear to be seeing House Republicans especially as causing delays in, for example, the budgeting of FEMA funding in order to provide disaster relief to the East Coast victims of Hurricane Irene. The latest bill before Congress would settle a lot of issues on government spending, but it has been held up over a new squabble. Republicans want to offset the funding of FEMA with $1.6 billion in spending cuts while Democrats argue that disaster relief does not have to be offset.

Even a number of Republicans, especially governors of states in need of the relief, are asking Congress to put aside the bickering so that the money can be disbursed. Gallup found similar feelings among voters, with 51 percent saying it may be more important to compromise than to stick to one’s beliefs, the first time a majority has been found on the compromise end of the spectrum.

While government-funding bills are always contentious, the amount of inaction caused by brinkmanship in Congress has caused high disapproval for every politician. “Yes, it is embarrassing, “said Virginia Democrat, Sen. Mark Warner, “Can we once again inflict on the country and the American people the spectacle of a near-government shutdown? I sure as heck hope not.”
