Driving Class for Seniors Lowers Insurance Rates and Improves Safe Driving

Online or Otherwise, a Little Touchup Now and Then Is Good for Everyone
by Wes Markham on September 9, 2011
Grandma has learned how to use her computer. The American Association of Retired Persons has reported a growing number of seniors taking driving courses online. Showing recent completion of this type of online refresher can help keep auto insurance rates down as they age. Other seniors are relieving high school by getting out on the road with driving instructors to really hone their skills.
The AARP’s online driver safety course is the first online course designed specifically for those 50 and older. In 2010, it enrolled over 60,000 students, a 30 percent increase from the previous year. At the end of July 2011, 100,000 students were learning how to drive again. The American Automobile Association has also reported a marked increase in enrollment for its senior driving courses online, about 20 percent more students per year for the last three.
Learning about driving may help with insurance rates and keep seniors aware of new traffic laws they may not have noticed, but some experts feel that may not actually translate to a real improvement in driving behavior. “Research shows that classroom programs don’t really impact positively on driving performance,” says Normand Teasdale, a professor studying the driving of seniors at the University Laval in Quebec. “You need to practice and get feedback over and over again to improve performance.”
This may be very important for seniors with deteriorating skills. Twenty-eight states currently have special laws instituted for senior drivers, often including regulations forcing seniors to renew their licenses more frequently. No one likes to admit that they might not be Michael Schumacher behind the wheel, but it is important for everyone on the road, young and old alike, to make sure they are fully prepared and capable.
That may not be the biggest concern among seniors at a time when money is extremely tight for everyone. It may only take one 4-hour course to obtain some form of discount no insurance, and online classes generally charge around 20 dollars to enroll. The discounts meted out by states for completing online driving courses can range from 2 percent to as much as 15. That equates to as much as $120 per year which seniors can spend on gifts for their grandchildren, or on a sweet new Camaro.
