Founder of Apple Raised the Company to the Gold Standard of Tech Design Worldwide

On October 5th, Steve Jobs, one of the founders of tech giant Apple, passed away at the age of 56. He is survived by his wife and four children. Steve Jobs’ influence in the world of technology cannot be understated and his legacy will live on through more than just the products he helped create, but many of the ways in which modern corporations are run.

Even industry rivals were quick to state the effect Jobs had. Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, released a statement saying, “The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.”

While Jobs was one of the original faces of the modern computer industry, he has become more famous in recent years for the string of successful Apple products starting with the iPod and continuing to the iPad. By creating an easy-to-use outlet for portable music, Jobs completely changed the face of how music is bought in sold. The iPod also marked the first time a person could literally walk around with 2,000 songs in their pocket.

Next came the iPhone, which has become the top smartphone worldwide, even helping to coin the term. In July of 2011, a Pew study found that 35 percent of all adults in America own a smartphone. The iPhone has become so ubiquitous in fact, that iPhone has reached a level of mainstream linguistic usage on par with Kleenex or Xerox. Rather than say “smartphone,” most people will often talk about iPhones, even when not specifically talking about an Apple product.

The latest innovation Jobs helped create, the iPad, is difficult to summarize, as it is still not at the level of market saturation it is likely to reach. Many tech experts, while initially cold on what amounted to basically a really big iPhone, have begun to view the iPad as the newest type of personal computer. By creating a portable computer with the legendarily intuitive design of Apple, tablet computers have begun to change the PC industry.

The Internet has been flooded with tributes and famous quotes since the news of Jobs’ death. With that in mind, it is only fitting to end with one of Jobs’ more famous remarks, “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… That’s what matters to me.”
