Salem Police Warn Community About Scams Threat

Man Receiving Scam Call

Fraudulent Debt Collectors From “Ace Payday Loans” Try to Intimidate Money From Victims

Scam artists are once again targeting consumers in order to scare and trick them into parting with their hard-earned cash. A press release has been issued by police in Oregon city of Salem warning of phone calls from scammers. Claiming to be collecting loans on behalf of Ace Payday Loans, the callers have been able to deceive customers into making payments on loans which the victim often never took out in the first place.

Victims of this latest scam have reported receiving phone calls from loan collectors who inform them that they have a loan in default and must make an immediate payment to avoid legal proceedings. When confronted by this sudden news, the scammers hope to scare consumers into making a payment without first verifying the status of the loan or the legitimacy of the call. While the business name may have varied from case to case, the police report that “Ace” was commonly a part of the name.

It can be extremely stressful to receive a phone call such as those described by the police. To compound the difficulty of vetting the call, scammers are often able to recite some personal information, like a social security number or part of a credit card number, in order to make themselves seem more authentic.

According to Salem Police Department, “In one case, the victim kept the caller on the line long enough to get on the internet and check the status of her loan, told the caller she was calling the police, then called her bank to cancel her debit card. This was the correct thing to do! Even if the caller has some correct information about you, don’t just assume they are legitimate and give them the information they want.”

Federal law requires that a debt collector verify all debt claims to a borrower in writing within five business days of a request for the materials. Should you ever receive a call from a debt collector who refuses this request, it is a sure-fire sign that they are either a scammer, or a collector attempting to use illegal collection methods. Don’t let a single phone call be the basis for an erroneous payment which could cost you a lot of money.
