Celebrate Columbus Day by Exploring Beyond the Horizon of Your Financial Future

Thinking in the Long Term Can Be Difficult, But This “New World” May Be Worth It
by Kevin Schneider on October 10, 2011
While Christopher Columbus has had a bit of a reputation crises in past years, the reason for Columbus Day has lost none of its importance. In the same way that St. Patrick’s Day can be said to be a pseudo Irish-American holiday, Columbus Day is especially important for Italian-Americans. However, that was not the original intention of the holiday.
The first celebration of a special day for Columbus was called by President Benjamin Harrison in 1892 in order to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in the New World. It became a federal holiday thanks to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934 and was originally celebrated on October 12th. According to the Library of Congress, Columbus began to be held on the second Monday of October in 1971.
Harrison described Columbus as, “the pioneer of progress and enlightenment.” This original view may not be entirely true today, but the intent of Columbus Day is every bit American. Columbus Day is a time to celebrate the spirit of exploration that has helped make the country great. In general, people fear the unknown. Whether this be the threat of sailing off the edge of the world or simply balancing your checkbook for the first time, today is a time for courage. While not everyone can be a professional explorer, we can all be inspired to better our lives by the bravery of Columbus and his crew.
When you plan to cross an ocean on a sailboat, you have to do more than just plan for tomorrow, you need to think about the next few months. This type of thinking is exactly what you need to do when taking control of your personal finances. If you have a loan out that you need to pay off, it is important to keep the coming weeks in mind when budgeting.
A common mistake made by many people in debt is when they spend just a little too much today with the intention of saving twice as much tomorrow. Even if they can be honest with their spending tomorrow, it is common for a little bit to be left out. These small bits of missing savings tend to add up so that weeks later, debtors may find themselves asking what went wrong. Just like Columbus, you need to plan for the future today, so that your in a better situation tomorrow.
